Her Deadly Secrets (Book Review)

Updated: May 28, 2019

Her Deadly Secrets is another release by Laura Griffin. I have read a lot of books (and a few novellas) by Laura including all of the Tracers and Alpha Crew series. Her Deadly Secrets continues Laura's penchant for equal parts thriller, romance, and independent women falling for sexy, tough guys.

Her Deadly Secrets is a spin-off from the Tracers Series as it features Wolfe Security which was introduced in book #9 ShadowFall, but it could work well as a standalone. In Her Deadly Secrets we are introduced to the latest smart and capable female character, Private Investigator Kira Vance. The action starts off with a bang (literally!) as Kira walks into a scenario where her mentor and boss is gunned down with the killer narrowly missing the opportunity to issue her the same fate. Kira, knowing the importance of acting swiftly, does her best to push aside her grief to catch the killer. To do this Kira has to work with (and sometimes work around) the police and her private bodyguards from Wolfe Security who were hired by a high powered lawyer that was also at the scene of the crime and is the center of the investigation. Oh yeah and her main obstacle; the killer who is still on the lose and will soon have her back in his sights.

Kira's head of security is Jeremy Owen (also featured in ShadowFall). Fresh off another security job Jeremy has had little rest so in addition to being the strong, silent type he's a little grumpy and it makes for some fun, cheeky dialogue between he and Kira as they navigate thru the twists and turns of the case.

A few things bothered me about this book. As with a lot of novels sometimes you have to suspend reality but there is way too many missteps and breaches to take Wolfe Security seriously. It's hard to buy into the premise that these are completely capable tough guys when they often do things that make them look simply like dumb jocks. I enjoyed Kira as a PI but in her personal life she sometimes came across as immature and needy which made her slightly less appealing. Jeremy was well suited as the strong, silent type completely committed to his duties so the mid-story romance annoyed me more anything. I wish the author would have taken a departure from her usual writing style and saved the romance to the end.

SIDENOTE: Maybe I've read so many of Laura Griffin's books that they're now intertwining in my mind because instead of enjoying this budding romance I was longing for a reunion between Jeremy and M.J. a female rookie cop that was featured in ShadowFall and imo better suited for Jeremy.

But overall Her Deadly Secrets was a good read. High on action, romance and suspense it's a quick thrill ride with a twist I didn't see coming. It will be interesting to see what else is in store for Wolfe Security.
